Networking During the Holidays

During the holidays, people sometimes take a break from networking. As people seem to be more relaxed during this time of the year, take advantage of these circumstances by reaching out and interacting with various individuals. I also find that it the perfect time to connect via social media. I use this opportunity to update my connections through Linkedin, but there are lots of other online resources to use. Such online networks connect you with people across the globe. I think that this is a very simple but important step to build your social networks.

Remembering Someone's Name and Faces

What is the best way to remember someones name and or their face? I did some research online and I got all sorts of tricks and tips. So I can only speak as to what works for me.
I guess I was fortunate enough for this to come more easily for me than for some. I have been working on this for many years. I started this at my first job in a bank in Indiana. I had a wonderful boss and mentor that stressed with me the importance of knowing the customer and providing the best customer service possible. Most customers visited the bank on a frequent basis. So I practiced and practiced learning as many customer's names and faces.
Having numerous networking opportunities in a week can be a little bit more of a challenge. After attending a function, I try to review the cards collected as soon as possible. This seems to help me.
When I am on the phone with a potential client, I usually write their name down on a piece of paper and have it in front of me during the conversation. I try to refer to them personally then when closing the phone call. I also find that this works great when calling one of that 800 numbers for customer service when I am the customer. By referring to that person by their first that who is helping me adds a personal touch to the conversation and get me better customer service.
Some people use the method of saying the person's name several times during that initial conversation. They insist that repetition can help to register the name in your mind so that you do not forget it.
Another commonly used method is visualization. Those that favor this method visualize in your mind the name of a new person you have just met. See the letters of the name as an image or picture.
I think the key in all of this is to keep working at it. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.

Having a Positive Attitude When Networking

How's your attitude? A negative attitude makes people dislike being around you and drives away referrals; a positive attitude makes people want to associate and cooperate with you. When you are positive people want to be around you and will more likely send their associates to you. Positive attitudes are contagious. Being positive contributes to your determination, motivation and ultimate business success.

Being Successful at Networking

Networking takes work. You don't just show up and things happen. One very important quality in a great networker is to follow-up on referrals in a timely manner. If I present an opportunity -- whether it's a simple piece of information, a special contact or a qualified business referral -- to someone who consistently fails to follow up successfully, you can bet that I will think twice before passing on more info. Following up with what you say you're going to do, when you say you're going to do it, builds your credibility and trust with your network.

Being a Powerful Resource
One goal that I have attempted since early on in networking was to become known as a powerful resource for others. When you are known as a strong resource, people remember to turn to you for suggestions, ideas, names of other people, etc. This keeps you visible to them. I try to put people together not only for sales, but also for jobs and events. I also like to share the resources available to those starting a new business or those new to the area. People don't soon forget those general nice gestures.

Things We Can Learn From A Dog
I would guess that most have heard of this before, but I feel that it is worth sharing again:
· Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
· Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
· When loved ones come home, always run and greet them.
· When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
· Let others know when they have invaded your territory.
· Take naps and stretch before rising.
· Run, romp, and play daily.
· Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
· Be loyal.
· Never pretend to be something you're not.
· If what you want is buried, dig until you find it.
· When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle him or her gently.
· Thrive on attention.
· Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
· On hot days, drink lots of water and sit under a shady tree.
· When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
· Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
· No matter how often you are scolded, don't buy the guilt thing and pout, run right
back and make friends.

Out and About Networking
I recently was invited by Ray Rodriguez of Diversified Human Resources to attend the Northern Pima County Chamber Networking Breakfast. I was amazed to see about 100 people at this 7am breakfast. Wow, what energy that early in the morning before coffee. This was a good meeting (if you can get up that early) with ample time to network with the crowd and have conversation at the table over breakfast.

Networking Skills
When I go to an event, I go with an agenda. If possible, which isn't often, I find out who will be there that I have not already met and make it a point to try and meet that person. But in most cases what has worked for me is to find a person that is standing alone and feeling out of place, and I go up and have a conversation with them. I find that this works quite well. It is much easier to approach one person than a group of even two or three for me. I also find that the person standing there alone is uncomfortable just standing there and this engages them in the event.

Expanding Your Network Through Volunteering
Make a Difference Day is the national day of helping others. This year, it is October 25th. As all the folks here at the Nextrio office prepare for a Computer Recycling Event, I am reminded of the phrase, “Be the change that you want to see in the world”. Don’t think that your contribution won’t mean something if it is not a massive contribution.
So what does this have to do with networking? Being involved with an organization that make a contribution is a wonderful way to expand your network. Doing something to help others can also lead to amazing and unforeseen results.
So what does this have to do with networking? Being involved with an organization that make a contribution is a wonderful way to expand your network. Doing something to help others can also lead to amazing and unforeseen results.
So give volunteering a try. Here are a couple of tips to help you get started.
- Start small. Do not feel you need to be a huge player. Find a small way to contribute. Just remember that one person cannot fix all the world's problems, so just do what you can.
- Find Your Passion. We are more likely to participate if we have a personal connection to an organization or cause. Find something that interests you.
Not only can volunteering expand your network, you may also find that it makes you smile.

Making A Good First Impression
In networking many times you have one opportunity to make a great first impression. Factors that influence this initial impact are your handshake, facial expressions, interest in the other person and your overall attentiveness. Develop a great handshake, approach people with a natural, genuine smile and make eye contact. Listen carefully to their name. If you don’t hear them or understand exactly what they say, ask them to repeat it. Many people do not speak clearly or loudly enough and many of us are very nervous at networking events. Make a powerful impression by asking them what they do before talking about yourself or your business. A good rule is to first to understand the other person and secondly to be understood. Comment on their business or have them explain something in more detail. As they speak, make sure you listen intently to what they tell you. Once you have demonstrated interest in someone else, they will – in most cases – become more interested in you.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN ORGANIZATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS
How do people get more out of professional associations and networking groups than others. I've seen time and again that it's simply not enough to pay your membership fee and hope for the best.
If you're involved in an organization give these tips a try and help increase your satisfaction with your group.
Even if you go to just a couple of events throughout the year you won't get you very far in most cases. Sure, you may meet some interesting people, but unless your profession is uniquely non-competitive, or you make an overwhelmingly positive first impression, it's unlikely that much will come of it. So when you join an organization make an investment of both time and money. Here are some things you can do to make the most of your investment:
- Limit your memberships. Don't spread yourself too thin. Maximize your experience by going for depth of involvement.
- Go to meetings and events on a regular basis. Build a base of support with regular members and position yourself with new members as someone in the know.
- Join a committee. Take a leadership role in the group and interact with members at a more meaningful level. Show them what you can contribute.
- Raise your visibility. Offer to find a a speaker or greet people at meetings. We always notice the host at a party more than the guests.
- Invite friends and associates. Share the learning and experience. It can be a win-win for you, your friend and the group.
If you're involved in an organization give these tips a try and help increase your satisfaction with your group.

Leads Groups in Tucson
Have you ever tried to find a group to join that you could network with only to find that you didn't like any of them? I found myself exactly in that situation. I had been looking for that true business-to-business group for sometime and have finally found a group that has potential to become just that group.
I recently joined a newly formed group in Tucson called Arizona Business Leads (ABL) of Tucson North. The goal is to have a a leads group does not need to be stuffy and always a round of sale pitches from companies that you may not be interested in. We also receive networking training to help make the most of our networking efforts.
Great Group. For more info go to http://www.businessleadsofamerica.com/
